Maria Callas: Book me a table at a café where the waiters know who I am
Plot
Maria Callas, the world’s greatest opera singer, lives out the last days of her life in 1970s Paris, where she grapples with her identity and her life. Angelina Jolie and director Pablo Larraín discuss how the heartbreaking true story of world-famous opera singer Maria Callas brought them together. The third and final film in Pablo Larraín’s so-called Lady in Heels trilogy of female biographies, following Jackie (2016) and Spencer (2021).
I’m in the mood for adoration
Mentioned in Close-Up: Why do We Need the Film Festival? (2024). Very well written and well directed.
The suggestions say more than they show
The actors give an extraordinary performance, especially Angelina and Haluk Bilginer. Some of the “hey Siri” scenes are not shown but are implied. In particular, the flashbacks to the Nazi occupation… The music is of course great, mainly Pulcini.
This film is highly recommended
The dialogue is sudden and unexpected. The dialogue between Callas and Kennedy is great and telling, as is the dialogue between Callas, Onasis and a Callas fan. These two dialogues show that the powerful men who were considered great in their time and great to this day were in fact simple, primitive people.
