Plot
When Cardinal Lawrence is tasked with leading one of the world’s most secret and ancient events, the election of a new pope, he finds himself at the center of a conspiracy that could shake the very foundations of the Catholic Church. The actions of Cardinal Lawrence and the other cardinals during the film’s conclave are faithful and precise to the Catholic faith and centuries-old tradition. The Vatican does indeed officially declare the throne of the Holy See (the governing body of the Catholic Church) vacant.

The papal residence is indeed sealed with a purple ribbon and sealed with a papal wax seal. The college of cardinals is indeed locked in apartments (in reality called the Domus Sanctae Marthae, or House of Saint Martha) to eat and sleep between votes. And finally, the windows and doors of the Sistine Chapel, where the actual elections take place and the votes are cast, are indeed blacked out, shuttered and locked to preserve the secrecy of the conclave.

The acting, the intrigue, the dialogue, and the cinematography are all there, but the warning signs are there early in the film. When the potential candidates talk about a new, liberal progressive church, it makes you wonder where else they could go with that, and boy, do they go with it. I’ll leave it at that odd shift in tone, but the ending, which I won’t spoil, comes from another movie, and the direction is at odds with everything they’re shooting for throughout the film.
It feels a little less like an expected political thriller about what the big event in the world is and when it’s going to happen, but then it shifts like a roller coaster in the final scenes
